Dog Owners Dump Dog At Shelter After Having His Eyes Removed Instead Of Treating Infection

Many people say they do their best to look after their dog, whether it’s feeding them, giving them a cozy bed, or handling their health needs.

But sometimes, we find out about someone who doesn’t do the right thing, like what happened in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

Shocking Reason to Dump a Dog

A dog named Louis, a three-year-old mix of lab and shepherd, was brought to the Helen Woodward Animal Center. His previous owners had left him there for a shocking reason.

Louis had an eye infection while with his old owners. The Helen Woodward center said that instead of treating the infection, the owners chose to remove his eyes. When Louis struggled to adapt to being blind, they left him at a shelter.

Poor Dog to Face Life without Eyes

Soon after his surgery, they sent Louis to a pound in Calexico because his old owners couldn’t deal with a blind dog. A partner rescue of Helen Woodward took Louis in for care at their center.

Now blind, Louis was also scared in new places and missed his old home. There are also visible injuries yet to receive any treatment, likely from a car accident.

No Pet Deserve a Life like Louis’

PEOPLE magazine quoted Hella Tyler, head of adoptions at Helen Woodward, saying, “It’s so important for pet owners to understand the commitment they’re making. When people get pets for free from places like Craigslist, they often don’t think about the ongoing responsibilities and costs, including medical care. But these pets give back so much love in return. It’s heartbreaking to see a pet treated like Louis was.”

Louis didn’t stay in the shelter long before moving to a foster home. Now he’s starting to learn to navigate life without sight with the help of a caring foster family.

Helen Woodward is looking for a permanent home for Louis. The ideal home would be a single-story, and it’s best if the owner works from home. Louis is still adapting to being blind and has a limp from an old injury.

Challenges Can’t Hold Him Back

Tyler says Louis is “extraordinary.” Despite poor treatment from his previous owners, he’s still very affectionate with people.

Helen Woodward offers a free training session, dog food, and treats to the family ready to take Louis in and give him a loving home forever.
